| Built by William West Durant in 1895-97, the Sagamore was sold to Alfred G. Vanderbilt in 1901. Then the wealthiest young man in the country, Vanderbilt had numerous buildings added to the already considerable estate. After his death on the Lusitania in1915, Alfred's widow Margaret kept Sagamore as her private Adirondack retreat untill 1954. Today Sagamore is a small non-profit corporation dedicated to the stewardship of Great Camp Sagamore and to its use for educational and interpretive purposes. |
